Harris Excavation recently completed a precision tree root exposure project for a residential client preparing to build their future home. The site required careful work to avoid damaging the existing roots, necessitating the use of hand tools. Over the course of four days, our team successfully excavated 150 linear feet of trench, measuring 3 feet deep and 18 inches wide, through challenging hard clay soil.
Our approach began with a detailed assessment of the site to plan the excavation process. With the client’s requirement to utilize hand tools for excavation, our goal was to plan how to keep our crew comfortable and safe while working. We brought out temporary shade structures, misting fans, and copious amounts of ice water to ensure our crew members did not overheat while working.
The excavation involved creating a trench that was both deep and wide enough to meet the arborist’s specifications. Despite the hard clay conditions, our team worked diligently to complete the project on budget. The result was a cleanly excavated trench that exposed the tree roots without causing any damage, providing the arborist with essential information to guide the development of the foundation plan.
